Rangely has two great options for pre-school which can be used individually or consecutively.

  1. Half day free public pre-school provided through CO BOCES for children 4 and up, and younger children identified as needing intervention.
  2. A high quality non-profit pre-school program and child care facility- Giant Step, available on a flexible schedule for children ages 2 and up.

The only licensed day care facility in Rio Blanco County and a non-profit 501(c)(3)

Giant Step is a licensed facility.

What does "licensed" mean?

Giant Step Center meets standards set by the Colorado Department of Human Services for childcare centers, including criteria for health and safety and for child care providers' qualifications (education and experience). For example, all workers at Giant Step undergo an extensive background check and are required to get training in First Aid, CPR as well as other areas.

What's the difference between Giant Step and a licensed day care home?

Giant Step is non-profit, while day care homes operate for profit. Money that is generated through fees and grants go back into the operation and include improvement of the facility. There is a Board of Directors to whom the Giant Step Director reports. The Board is composed of community members who volunteer their time, energy, and expertise to make Giant Step a fun, educational, and viable center.  Licensed day care homes do not have this additional layer of support and help.

Giant Step provides quality day care with trained and supervised staff, scheduled activities, and a safe, inspected facility. Academic activities are implemented daily to include the summer.  Children are taken to the library as well as the Rec Center swimming pool.

Volunteers visit frequently and offer additional activities such as reading and dance. Plenty of space and toys allow for a stimulating, enriched environment where children can learn through free play as well as through structured opportunities.
