Andy Shaffer has been a dedicated resident of Rangely since the fall of 1990, when he arrived to attend the Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC) Aviation program. He completed the program in 1992, earning an Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Technology along with his Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument (CFII) ratings. The following fall, he returned to CNCC as an instructor in the Aviation program.

Shaffer later pursued a career in electrical work, starting as an apprentice at Ducey Electric before joining Brenton Service Company, where he earned his Journeyman Electrical License in 1997. In 1998, seeking greater stability and opportunities for his family, he transitioned into the natural gas industry—a move he still views as the right one after more than two decades.

Deeply committed to community service, Andy volunteered with the Rangely Fire Department for 27 years. He also served on the Rangely Town Council for six years: four as a Council Member and two as Mayor.

Andy is a proud parent to two children, both who were raised in Rangely. Their daughter, Sidney, graduated from the CNCC Nursing program and works as a registered nurse. She gave Andy his first grandchild. Braxton, attends Rangely High School and enjoys dirt biking, basketball, baseball, and wake surfing.

Initially, like many students, Andy saw Rangely's landscape as a temporary stop—he stayed mostly on campus during his first year and missed the flatlands. But after spending the summer between his freshman and sophomore year in town, he discovered the area's natural beauty, outdoor opportunities, and strong sense of community. More than 30 years later, he has no regrets and is grateful to have built his life and raised his family here.

Andy believes Rangely's small-town charm and lifestyle are major draws for residents. As an industry-driven community with economic cycles, the town must prioritize diversification—particularly by capitalizing on its unique BLM surroundings to promote tourism and other opportunities—to build resilience during downturns.

He is also focused on retaining the local workforce by making Rangely an attractive place to live, work, and raise families. Andy remains committed to addressing challenges while celebrating what makes Rangely truly Way Outside of Ordinary.
